National Handwashing Awareness Week

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that handwashing is an effective solution for eliminating germs, preventing sickness, and stopping the spread of germs.  

Each year, there is an entire week in December dedicated to handwashing awareness.   

What Is National Handwashing Awareness Week? 

This annual event occurs in the first week of December and focuses on educating people on the importance of handwashing hygiene. Handwashing awareness dates back to the 1840s when a health expert from Hungary began gathering data in maternity wards. The data showed that doctors didn’t wash up while working on different patients, so they carried germs to other patients.  

Today, we know that handwashing is a vital practice to stop the spread of bacteria and germs and infection prevention. 

Important Handwashing Guidelines 

You may not notice it, but germs can quickly spread when you touch contaminated objects, sneeze into your hands, consume foods with unwashed hands, and more.  

Note that a quick rinse doesn’t guarantee that you’ll effectively get rid of germs. According to hand hygiene guidelines from the CDC, you should make a habit of scrubbing your hands for about 20 seconds.  

Here are simple handwashing guidelines:  

  1. Start by wetting your hands with clean water 
  2. Next, use soap to lather your hands 
  3. Make sure you scrub hands up to the elbows for about 20 seconds 
  4.  Rinse your hands.  
  5. Using a blow dryer or paper towel, dry your hands 

Handwashing Keeps Illnesses at Bay 

Handwashing may seem like a simple act, but it plays a vital role in keeping people safe and healthy. In recent years, handwashing has once again proved to be a fundamental cornerstone in preventing the spread of COVID-19. Besides, COVID-19 mainly spreads through direct and indirect contact with infected people or objects.  

You should practice washing hands regularly, especially after sneezing or coughing. This also goes a long way in preventing the spread of germs that cause flu and the common cold.  

Also, make a habit of washing hands before and after eating, using the toilet, and handling garbage. Washing hands after touching common surfaces like handles also helps keep you and those around you safe. 

Why Handwashing Is Important 

Washing hands helps prevent the spread of germs and viruses, which can lead to diseases. Moreover, hand washing helps to battle antibiotic resistance. Besides, this is a simple act that only requires running water and soap.  

No one likes staying at home due to illness. Therefore, handwashing should be standard practice in the workplace.
